UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has ordered Dhs6 million to support sports activities for people with special needs and encourage their engagement in sports and participation in local, regional and international events. According to a release posted on the Ruler’s official website, he made the announcement while attending the 2014 IPC Powerlifting World Championships, being held at the Dubai Club for the Disabled from April 5 to 11. The Dubai Ruler inspected the facilities at the Dubai Club for the Disabled and spoke with athletes participating in the event that attracted more than 430 players, men and women, from 65 countries. He was briefed by Thani Juma Belregaad, Chairman of the Championship Organising Committee, on preparations of the event in its fifth edition; an important stage leading to the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Speaking to International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven, Sheikh Mohammed expressed satisfaction with the level of organisation highlighting that disability is never a barrier for achieving success and excellence.
