UCFL News & Notes - Week 1 Edition. A hush rolls over the digital coliseum as warriors square up for battle on the scoreboard tab of the website. Months of preparation devoted to this moment leave twelve competitors in a fervent race to the postseason. As the story unfolds and the annals of history materialize from the blood, sweat and tears of the slain; theres one place you can turn for the record- unbiased, undistorted, and true. This is your UCFL News and Notes. Absolutely clobbered... just not how you want to start a season. The Albino Buffalo Chips looked like they didnt even realize the season had begun. Russell Wilson got them off to a nice start, earning 13.3 fantasy points on 2 TD passes; but the teams success ended there. No other player on the squad found the endzone, or even managed more than 5 fantasy points. But this 93.9-37.9 tale of two teams tells an entirely different story from the other sideline. Coach Gutsches team Petty thrilled fans and well wishers alike. Peyton Manning looked sharp, hooking up with his TE for 3 scores, while troubled RB LeVeon Bell held down his end of the bargain with over 100 and a score. Cordarrel Patterson, a Wide Receiver, rushed (yes, rushed) past the century mark, with a TD. Six of this teams seven non-K, non-D players found the endzone, making Petty name to watch in 2014. The 2013 UCFL champion kept things rolling with a commanding win in week 1. Team Decker defeated Bear Skin by a 43.5 point margin, 101.8-58.3. The skins paltry performance started off with a disappointing opening stanza from 2nd round pick and perennial favorite Aaron Rodgers, who threw only 1 TD and accumulated only 189 yards. Antonio Brown was the teams bright spot earning 14.8 fantasy points on a 116 yard, 1 TD day that included a kick of the face of a punter. Unfortunately, that performance couldnt prevent the kick to the face that Decker was ready to deal to Coach Toensing. Matthew Stafford was sensational, as the passhappy Lions offense threw a pair of TDs and allowed him to rush one in. Marshawn Lynch, Knowshon Moreno, A.J. Green and The 49ers Defense all found the endzone as well, with many hands making light work of a thin Bear Skin in the league leading week 1 performance. Projections had it as one of the tightest affairs of week 1, but it didnt turn out that way. *98.11% Deet racked up 92.4 points to Coach LaBarres 55.4 points, en route to a stunning victory. The Hybrids enjoyed a solid day from RB DeMarco Murray who rushed for 118 with a TD, while QB Drew Brees had a pedestrian day (for him) netting over 300 yds with only 1 TD. *98.11% Deet enjoyed a tremendous day from TE Julius Thomas, who found the endzone thrice netting 104 yards. And as Luck would have it, his QB threw for 370 yds and 2TDs, earning one on the turf as well. The absence of kicker Blair Walsh was a psychological blow to the team, but Saints kicker Shayne Graham filled in admirably and aided the victory cause himself, matching the performance of the perennial Viking superstar with 11 fantasy points. The Wet Bandits? Is that a home alone reference, or is it because they slipped and fell into the wet concrete below? In week 1, the CO River Dam Builders buried Coach Balzart in that tomb that knows no sound, but dont worry- hes still around. The 60.9-38.6 victory starts Coach Soukups season on the right foot, as Balzarts highly projected powerhouse squad fell flat as if theyd slipped on a series of well placed micro machines. Carson Palmer delivered the teams only bright spot, throwing two touchdowns on a 300yd day. While the rest of the team managed nothing of benefit. Adrian Peterson burned his hand on a doorknob, Stevan Ridley stepped on a large nail, Jason Witten was tarred and feathered, while Alshon Jeffery simply got lost in New York. The Dam Builders were another story. Matt Ryan came out of the gate strong throwing for 448 yards, 116 of which went to teammate Julio Jones. Shane Vereen and Rob Gronkowski also impressed with trips to the endzone. Jeff won over the Loons. Great kicker. Loons managed to score consistently, but without bust out performances, they just couldnt top the incredible performance by Blair Walsh. In fact, of all the players on Loons team, only his quarterback outperformed the Vikings phenom. Forte, Bell and Ertz all found the endzone on otherwise tepid days. Jeff enjoyed a solid day by Blair Walsh, who kicked two field goals, one of which was from 56 yards. He was also 4/4 on extra points. Look for the kicker to continue carrying this squad. The commissioner had drawn some flack for intentionally scheduling this rivalry match on week 1, but the game didnt disappoint. In the closest matchup of the week, the North American Apes topped the Koo Koo Ka Choos 59.8-52.1. This UCFL Game of the Week wasnt a high scoring affair but it was certainly competitive. The difference maker came in the form of WR Calvin Johnson for the Apes. He caught 2 TDs on a 164 yd day, while the Vikings Defense put on a clinic against the struggling Rams, earning a pick 6, 5 sacks, and holding the opponents to a mere pair of field goals. Overpriced QB Jay Cutler did deliver a return on the Ka Choos investment, throwing for almost 350 and 2 TDs, while Montee Ball found the endzone once. These teams will play again in week 13, so well have to wait and see how things develop between now and then, but the vicious rivalry will certainly be in swing then. The journey is just begun. Pandoras box is open, and the only way out now is through. Weve got another 12 weeks ahead of us before we can think about resting. Savor the ride while it lasts, and crack open a cold Grain Belt while you enjoy the games. Fantasy season is back gentlemen... and so are your UCFL News and Notes!
