UI, UCH approve research into stroke management UI, UCH Ethics Committee has approved and announced the commencement into the study of Stroke through the collaborative effort of the Stroke Investigative Research and Education Network (SIREN). The study is a weave of three cores: Systematic Investigation of Blacks with Stroke (SIBS) - Phonemics, SIBS-Genomics and SIBS- Bioinformatics. SIREN is aimed at evaluating the leading genetic and environmental risk factors for stroke in Sub-Saharan Africa and to investigate the qualitative and quantitative contributions of traditional and novel socio-demographic risk factors to stroke occurrence, type and outcome among individuals of the Black race in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) through a cross continental multi-centre case control study and then comparing these variables to group of individual black race in the United States. Other collaborating institutions include Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria; Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital Kano; University of Ghana Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana; Kwame Nkrumah University Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana and Medical University of South Carolina, USA.
