UK UNIVERSITY OF CUMBRIA BECAME THE FIRST UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD TO ACCEPT TUITION FEES FROM STUDENTS BY NEW CYBER CURRENCY KNOWN AS BITCOIN 23TH RD JANUARY 2014 THE DIGITAL CURRENCY Bitcoin received further endorsement when two Las Vegas casinos and a UK university announced that they will begin accepting it. Reuters reported that sister hotels The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino and The D Las Vegas Casino and Hotel will begin accepting Bitcoins Wednesday at their facilities. Customers will be able to pay for hotel rooms and related purchases. The hotels restaurants American Coney Island restaurant and Joe Vicaris Andiamo Italian Steakhouse will also take the cyber currency as payment for meals. Downtown has really become a technology hub for all of Las Vegas, Derek Stevens, co-owner and COO for the complexes told Reuters. I think it is fitting that the Golden Gate and The D are the first hotels to offer [Bitcoin as a payment option]. Meanwhile back in the UK the University of Cumbria is offering to let students pay course fees with Bitcoin. Appropriately enough, the payment will be available to students enrolling in a course that examines the role of complementary currencies run by the universitys Institute for Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS). University of Cumbria Professor Jem Bendell of IFLAS explained, We believe in learning by doing, and so to help inform our courses on complementary currencies, we are trialling the acceptance of them. The internal discussions about currency and payment innovation and the practical implications for different departments have been insightful. The decision makes the University of Cumbria the first public university in the world to accept Bitcoin payment, following a private university in Cyprus that made a similar announcement recently.
