UK interest rates remain at record low for 68th month The UK base rate has been kept at its record low of 0.5 per cent for the 68th consecutive month by the Bank of Englands Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The rate of inflation has declined over the past two months, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) dropping to 1.2 per cent in September. And when combining this with the cooling of the housing market, there is now less pressure on the MPC to increase interest rates. Minutes released from the last meeting in October showed that two members of the MPC voted for an increase of 0.25 per cent, arguing that adding an early rise would help ensure that subsequent base rate rises were only gradual.
