UKIPs historic victory is even more remarkable considering there were another six anti-EU parties standing in the UK, including a spoiler party designed to confuse people into thinking they were voting for UKIP. In London UKIP did less well than in the rest of England and in Wales (though the excellent Gerard Batten kept his seat), mainly because the capitals richly cosmopolitan demographic favours pro-EU parties, but perhaps also because of the almost daily vilification of UKIP throughout the election campaign by the citys high-circulation free commuter newspapers.
