ULTRA-ROYALISTS GONE WILD by Political prisoners of thailand · When a royalist military regime is in power, the ultra-royalists are unleashed. Khaosod reports that a “group of ultra-royalists in Chiang Mai province have urged police to take action against a Facebook user who allegedly insulted the monarchy…”. They chant that “a Facebook user by the name of Roongnapha Kampichai repeatedly posted comments defaming the Royal Family.” Such ultra-royalism plays neatly into the hands of the dictatorship, allowing it to gain “legitimacy” by claiming to “protect” the monarchy. As is quite usual for the ultra-royalists, their leader in this event, Krit Yiammethakorn, determined to speak for all – later he says a “majority” – when he proclaimed that “Chiang Mai residents cannot tolerate any libelous remarks directed at the monarchy.” Krit barked about “we love His Majesty the King,” a claim made by many from criminals and gangsters to the military brass (maybe that’s all one group), and demanded that those “who love the nation and the monarchy … come out and defend the institutions they revere.” Krit seems dangerously trapped in 1976. Like the military, Krit reckons there’s a “network” of anti-monarchists “intent on destroying the monarchy.” Krit demanded action against the Facebook republicans. PPT’s guess is that, like 1976, the military is backing royalist groups, cajoling and supporting their activities in order to repress opponents.
