UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD STEM CELL COLLECTION Families are frequently requesting information on umbilical cord blood stem cell collection at the time of birth. Less than 1% of patients delivering at Norwest Private request that the cord blood be collected for storage and future potential use (possibly in an ill family member). I would remind patients of the RANZCOG and AAP statements on this practice which suggest it has limited usefulness. It is recommended that expectant families only consider private cord banking when they have a relative with a known disorder that is treatable by stem cell transplants. Studies to date (and data from the private storage companies themselves) show that the chance of a child being able to use his / her own cord blood is extremely small - from a 1:400 to 1:200,000 chance over the childs lifetime.
