UMass Dartmouths Dr. Gaurav Khanna has built an extremely low-cost supercomputer using 176 Sony Playstation 3 gaming consoles. The supercomputer is installed in a refrigerated shipping container or “reefer” of large cooling capability located conveniently on-campus. This system’s performance is comparable to nearly 3000 processor-cores of a typical laptop or desktop. The PS3 cluster is currently being used by the CSCVR to perform large and complex calculations in the context of black hole astrophysics, and also explore vulnerabilities in cybersecurity. Dr. Khanna serves as Associate Director of UMass Dartmouths Center for Scientific Computing and Visualization Research.
