UN Guest Speaker Recently, we were very fortunate to have Alam Khan visit the Booker School. He works with the United Nations to help refugees and internally displaced people. Although he had just flown in from Islamabad the day before, he drove into the Annapolis Valley to speak with our students about his work, his experiences, and the work of the United Nations (he wore his United Nations shirt and even brought his United Nations passport for us to see). He also spoke to us about what is happening in Syria at the moment and how individuals can help, which reinforced the importance of our current fundraising efforts. cbc.ca/news/world/three-reasons-the-number-of-refugees-is-as-high-as-it-is-today-1.2651327 Action Cycle To complete the Action Cycle of our unit of inquiry: Where We Are in Place and Time and its focus on migration – including that of refugees, our students organized a fundraiser: Silence for Syria which occurred for a day at school. Our students raised over $1000 to donate to children in Syria. theguardian/world/2014/may/21/many-ways-die-syria-neil-gaiman-refugee-camp-syria
