UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane, to deliver guest lecture at Leiden University Tomorrow, Tuesday December 2nd, Angela Kane will deliver a guest lecture on conflict resolution and peace-keeping. The lecture, which takes place in the context of close cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and Leiden University, will be followed by a discussion among the researchers, diplomats and students present. In order to stimulate the discussion, four theses have been proposed. Students of the Global Affairs minor are asked to give their opinion in the comments section below BEFORE TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2ND, 10:00. The findings will be discussed and will be used as leads in the discussion following Ms. Kane’s lecture. Please let us know what you think about the following four topics: 1. Creating economic opportunities in post-war areas should be the primary focus of the international community rather than building and or strengthening local rule of law. 2. Conflict resolution and peace-keeping should be undertaken at the most local level possible. Conflicts in for example West-Africa should thus be addressed by ECOWAS or the AU, not by the UN. 3. Despite the current geopolitical volatility, maintaining equitable contributions to worldwide peacekeeping operations should be one of the international community’s priorities. 4. Protection of civilians should be at the core of any peace-keeping operation.
