UNCONVINCING CON A INCH BACK INTO TOP SPOT (Match Reports 22 01 2015) Con A used their game in hand to inch back to top spot in the table with a less than convincing 3 – 2 win over West Devon B. West Devon can rightly feel unlucky not to have come away from this game with more than they did. Steve Johns making a come – back for the Cons after more years than he would care to mention, was not made to feel welcome by West Devon’s Horrell who made life difficult for Johns with some tight snooker. Eventually Johns did what he does best by taking the difficult pressure black to snatch the frame and point. Hoare bounced the West Devon right back in to it with a ‘trademark’ solid performance to inflict more misery on an out of sorts Cook. Lacey for the Con’s after a slow start, heard the alarm clock and kicked into gear with a couple of double figure visits to remove Gilchrist. With the West Devon now facing defeat it was John Rich that pulled them back in to it with the unlikeliest of wins over Con’s ‘main man’ Carruthers. An early 18 break showed Rich’s intent and he went on to capitalise on some uncharacteristically wayward snooker from Carruthers to take the pink and black from under Carruthers nose to steal the frame. With the match all square, it was not for the first time this season, down to the ever dependable Tom Evans to save the Con’s blushes. Never looking in danger, Evans made short work of a ‘rusty’ looking Roger Rich to coast home with the match winning frame for the Con’s. A timely return to something resembling form for the Con Z Team after last week’s poor effort, has seen them jump into second place in the league albeit temporarily. Fitzsimmons for the Z team got off to a bright start, but a spate of unfortunate in-offs left him struggling to catch the steady McKechnie (Junior). Despite a decent fight back Fitzsimmons was left to rue the series of early errors. McKechnie (Senior) for the Z team managed a relatively comfortable win over Monk to give the Z team parity. Mark Evans played his usual steady game against late replacement Symons of the Z team, notching up a break of 27 in the process, however Symons fought back producing some fine potting but fluffed it on an easy pink which in all probability would have given him the game. Time to bring out the Z team’s big guns in the shape of John Dodd who dispatched Ewings with little or no trouble, a fine display of controlled potting from Dodd. All square as the teams went into the last frame. A very tight game ensued with no quarter asked or given between Hall of the Z team and Lillicrap, both players were determined to gain the edge and it appeared Lillicrap had reached the finishing line first with the black ball hovering over the pocket to take the game. He potted the black but followed in with the white, game to Hall. A very tight and ultimately enjoyable match overall.
