UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU READ “Understandeth, thou what thou readest.” (Acts 8:30) A story was told about a man who was supposed to be reading a newspaper. Assuredly, he was reading about some very interesting as he was laughing uncontrollably. On getting closer to the reader, a bystander observed that the paper was turned upside down. Obviously, the unlettered man was only pretending. Understanding what you read involves series of connected skills such as understanding word meanings in context, finding the main idea, making inferences about information implied but not stated, and distinguishing facts and opinion. Word study is one of the ways a student can improve on the understanding of what is read. This involves using of dictionaries and thesaurus. In senior secondary school and college, where reading materials are more abstract, the developments of efficient study strategies are required. One useful study techniques at this level is outlining, which helps to develop an awareness of the main point and details of the selection. Reading and understanding what you read will also help you to understand the word of God. Like the Ethiopian Eunuch did, desire and pray that God will give you wisdom and understanding of the scripture. Ask God to teach you His commandment today (Psalm 119:12) Challenge: Understand the secret of your success. Prayer: Lord, help me to read with understanding.
