UNESCO CHAIR FOR SECMOL INSTITUTE OF ALTERNATIVES: At CRATerre/National School of Architecture, Grenoble there was another important event that was very special for SECMOL and for me personally. SECMOL Institute of Alternatives, Phey was accorded membership of UNESCO Chair for Earth Architecture, Constructive Cultures and Sustainable Development. This is a rare honour accorded in order to create Centres of Excellence to accelerate the research and development worldwide, and the dissemination of scientific and technical know-how on earthen architecture in the three domains: environment and heritage, human settlements, and economy and production. Normally this is accorded to full scale Universities and Institutes of Higher learning. SECMOL is the 4th in Asia and 2nd in India after Auroville Earth Institute to receive the honour. I do hope that we can do justice to this responsibility of conserving the ancestral knowledge in this field, furthering the knowledge through research and experiments and finally through trainings handing it over to the future generations of Ladakh, India and the world. There were also important meetings to organize training courses on Earth Building techniques in Ladakh in 2015 in which CRATerre and other global institutions will also participate. This would be followed by a conference of experts and policy makers and finally a festival for the common people celebrating earth and sun. We will make announcements in this regards soon. After Grenoble my talk was at the National School of Architecture Montpelier, where roughly 200 students, professors and some star architects of the city were also invited.
