UNITED WE MINE: GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA, INDIAN BUREAU OF MINES, TAKE FIRST STEPS TO WORK TOGETHER The three major agencies working in the field of mineral resource augmentation, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) and Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), with headquarters in the city, will now be working in close collaboration to avoid duplication of work and share resources and manpower. The much needed strategy was formally agreed upon during the third synergy meeting on Wednesday of the three major components of the ministry of mines. Basically, there are two types or stages of mineral exploration, greenfield and brownfield. GSI is primarily responsible for greenfield exploration, which means that the occurrence of any mineral done at any site for the first time. Whereas, organizations like MECL are expected to evaluate the mineral resource and IBM establishes the reserves for mining. The three agencies hardly used the data available with each other while doing their job. GSI director general Sudesh Wadhawan, however, took a lead in bringing the three on a single platform for better synergy and resource augmentation. As a first step in the new agreement, IBM will be calling for tenders to mine 60 blocks of sand mines in offshore (sea/ocean) identified by GSI. In another step, GSI would take a relook at the schedule 1 minerals like iron and bauxite ores in Karnataka, where the state government has already digitized the entire data on the two minerals. It would also be going for 3-D modelling of these ore deposits. All this will be a part of upgrading the national mineral inventory using the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) system, which will make this data available for the world as well. IBM will now be responsible for making the pre-feasibility and feasibility reports for evaluating mineral resources.
