UNM student Holly Caulder has organized a letter to the editor - TopicsExpress

UNM student Holly Caulder has organized a letter to the editor workshop as part of her spring internship with a non-profit environmental group. The workshop will be held in C&J room 104 on Tuesday April 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students who attend will have the chance to write their own letter to the editor and send it in to a New Mexican newspaper of their choice so their opinions can be published. C&J instructor Gwyneth Doland and an environmentalist will be speakers to talk about letter-writing and several environmental issues going on within New Mexico. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the power of the press to change opinions and about their power as citizens to influence their peers. From Gwyneth Doland: I just want to add that I said yes to Holly because I believe it’s vitally important to increase the diversity of voices on the letters and op-ed pages of news outlets. Why? Because only about 10-20 percent of newspaper opinion pieces are written by women. For more about writing op-eds and other opinion pieces, and for more data about diversity in opinion pages, check out The Op-Ed Project, a fantastic organization with connections to my beloved Journalism and Women Symposium.
