UNP with new appointments gets ready to topple regime: Harin’s move unprecedented in SL political history (Lanka-e-News- 25.Sep.2014, 9.00PM) The UNP has at last sought solutions to its issues that were proliferating within it monthly , by making new office bearer appointments. The working committee that met at Sri Kotha chaired by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed a new set of office bearers on 22nd . It was announced that these changes have been made with the up coming Presidential elections in view, and with top priority given to that. While making the new proposals ,Wickremesinghe said , these changes have been sought to bring about unity and harmony within the party , and if there is anybody who is opposed to them to make that known. Nobody made any objections or expressed opposition. Ruwan Wijewardena who is the President of the National youth front tendered his resignation , and wished that Harin Fernando be appointed in his place. At that juncture Harin while exclaiming ‘gifts after gifts being showered,’ gave Wijewardena’s ‘gift’ back to the latter while describing it as the best gift.. Harin who resigned his parliamentary post and contested the Uva provincial council (PC )elections , and returning the ‘gift’ were something without parallel in Sri Lanka political history. Harin in his speech extolled Karu Jayasuriya .He went on to say his victory is because of Karu’s dedication and commitment . At 22nd’s meeting the topic of common candidate was not discussed. Under the UNP constitution ,if there are no objections raised against these appointments within 21 days , these appointments become legally valid. The appointments made are as follows: Deputy leader – Sajith Premadasa Assistant leader –Ravi Karunanayake (Joseph Michael Perera resigning) National youth Front President -Harin Fernando (Ruwan Fernando resigning) Deputy general secretary –Akila Viraj Kariyawasam (new appointment) Senior Vice President- Ranjith Madduma Bandara Deputy general secretary (election affairs)-Thalatha Athukorale Treasurer –Eran Wickremeratne 20 members were appointed to the committee for the Presidential elections affairs, which included Ranil, Sajith and the 5 other members of the leadership council. All of them were MP’s except one – that was Harin Fernando. It was specially noteworthy that though the Colombo municipal council which is controlled by the UNP and Colombo , the Capital city is most crucial for Presidential elections , the mayor of Colombo was not appointed to the committee for Presidential elections affairs.
