UPDATE 1:45 P.M. SUFFOLK, Virginia (November 29, 2013) –Suffolk Police advise the affected roadway will remain closed for approximately another hour as the 18-wheeler is righted and damaged power poles are replaced and lines repaired in the area. The 18-wheeler was hauling hogs to market from Goldsboro Hog Farm located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Of the approximately 180 hogs which were onboard the truck, approximately 80 died as a result of the accident. No hogs escaped from the trailer. TRACTOR TRAILER ACCIDENT CLOSES PORTION OF GODWIN BOULEVARD SUFFOLK, Virginia (November 29, 2013) –Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue remain on the scene of a tractor trailer accident which occurred at 7:24 a.m. in the 5900 block of Godwin Boulevard (Route 10) in Chuckatuck. The preliminary investigation indicates the tractor trailer was traveling northbound when it ran off the road. As a result of the accident, power lines are down in the area and Dominion Virginia Power remains on scene. Lines from Verizon and Charter Communications were also involved. Only two customers are currently without power due to the situation, however, the roadway is expected to remain closed for several hours as crews work to repair lines in the area and the tractor trailer is removed. Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel secured a fuel leak at the scene of the accident. Detours are currently in place on Godwin Boulevard/Route 10 at Everett’s Road, as well as King’s Highway at Godin Boulevard/Route 10. The driver, Antonio Marquez, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, was not injured in the accident. He has been charged with Reckless Driving and Failure to Maintain Control. The investigation is ongoing. Sgt. Q. Beers and Officer D. McLamb are the investigating officers.
