UPDATE, BARNEY: Barney continues to do well but we can see him waning. He is still eating every meal offered and enjoys his treats as any healthy dog might. Barney wags his tail each time we come into his room to see him and openly and shamelessly bears his tummy for anyone who may wish to give it a rub. His breathing is stable even though cancer has metastasized to his lungs and all of his lymphatic system. He still wishes to go outside when asked and even occasionally playfully strolls away into a large yard for exploration. Obviously he tires easily and is more than happy to retire back into his room. Many have asked us to let him go and to these people I would say this, he is NOT ready, as long has he continues to eat, wag his tail, ask, or rather demand tummy rubs, he is more than welcome to stay. It is my wish to give him as many days of good living as he wishes. I would also say, that he will let me know when he cannot carry on any longer. At that point the doctor will come to him and we will surrender him to that needed gentle and humane release. We want him to know as many carefree days as possible, days for which do not require search for warmth, shelter, food and affection. Days that are not spent running and escaping from people who chase and shoo him away due to his homeless status and condition.
