UPDATE FROM CHINA: Met the Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin, today, at the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Held tangible and wide-ranging discussion on reinforcing Pakistan-China’s economic, trade, commercial, energy and strategic relations. Stressed that the Asian region is going through a massive economic transition. There are four centers of growth in the region including China, South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. There is a need to connect these regions into an economic bloc thus unlocking enormous potential of the region. Pakistan wants to play a critical role in the interconnectivity of the region and solicited China’s help in pursuing that endeavor. The Economic Corridor project between Pakistan and China is of profound importance and Pakistan is determined to execute this project in the shortest possible time. It is imperative that the region’s economy is converted from war-economy to peace-economy through infrastructure and trade development projects and people-centered and development-oriented policies are pursued. Later, met EXIM Bank Chairman and China Development Bank Executive Vice President. Urged that economic corridor and infrastructure funds be set up to push implementation of projects. Asked EXIM for waiver of insurance premium on development loans secured by Government of Pakistan. Also visited leading telecom company which agreed to set up a research center in Pakistan.
