UPDATE: New Bedford High School teacher Joanne Maura has received - TopicsExpress

UPDATE: New Bedford High School teacher Joanne Maura has received an official memo stating that she is under investigation and could be terminated. She was to have a meeting today at noon. You failed to perform your responsibilities as a teacher at New Bedford High School and properly inform administration of the nature, detail and severity of the incident in a timely fashion. As this investigation may result in discipline up to and including termination from employment you have the right to have union representation or legal representation present during the meeting. Also, according to Joanne Maura on a comment on NewBedfordGuide she was reprimanded in the past for NOT taking away cell phones: I am the teacher in the video. Our school policy calls for the phone to be turned in to the office. The student is allowed to pick it up at the end of the day. Some students even choose to leave their cell phones in a secured location at their house offices because they obviously don’t need them during the school day. Incidentally, my feeling is that if we took every cellphone that every student had during the day, there would be no time for teaching. At least 75% have them and half of these have no qualms about using them during the day. I DO DRAW THE LINE DURING TESTS AND QUIZZES. However, the administration recently came down on me during two unannounced class visits and cited me for not enforcing the cell phone policy. When they are unwilling to back us teachers up, then we become discouraged and do the best we can to teach despite the distractions. Just so you know, and it was the first block of the day, about 9 a.m. that this incident happened.
