UPDATE ON THE TANKER TRUCK TURNED OVER ON BRIG. GEN. BARRICK BRIDGE (SISTERSVILLE, STATE ROUTE 2); CAUSTIC CHEMICAL SPILL The Sodium Hydroxide leak on the tanker has been stopped. Sistersville Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) Public Information Officer Bill Dawson has stated that a small amount of the chemical entered the creek, which runs under the bridge and empties into the Ohio River. While the levels that entered the river are reportedly not dangerous to the public, crews from local plants are helping with further containment in order to make sure that the leak goes nowhere else. While continuing to cover the scene, local responders are currently waiting for a tow truck to arrive from Morgantown to remove the wrecked vehicle. Dawson said that he expects the Route 2 bridge to be closed most of the evening. While people are able to take detours through various back roads, they are urged to use caution due to weather conditions. Former Tyler Star News reports that a HazMat team was not called were mistaken. A HazMat team was called immediately, and along with the Department of Highways they will be giving the area a final sweep before re-opening the bridge. Crews from Axial and Momentive also sent their emergency responders to assist, while Paden City Volunteer Fire Company initially aided SVFD. Sistersville Police Department was also early on the scene.
