UPDATE: Students Riot In The University Of Benin, Causes Heavy Traffic Jam Information just filtering in informs that the University of Benin, Benin City, is currently on fire as students of the institution are rioting, burning down valuables, blocking roads and causing severe traffic jam. Though the cause of the riot is still unknown as at the time of compiling this report; however, a source informed that it might have been as a result of a controversy between the governor of the Edo State, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Godwin Osayuki Oshodin. “The students are rioting this morning because Governor Oshiomhole demolished the house belonging to the former VC of the school,” the source stated. Another source stated: “Benin is hot this morning, University of Benin students are rioting, blocking roads, burning cars, buses, and lorries; please, do not go towards that area for now.” It was gathered that as a result of the students’ riot there was severe traffic gridlock in Benin. Meanwhile, one of the lecturers of Uniben who spoke on phone with Talkafrica, said: “The situation in the University of Benin started yesterday [January 6th, 2015], and escalated today [January 7th, 2015]. “As as I communicating with you on phone, I can confirm to you that there is not just a riot in UNIBEN, but, there is crisis, chaos. “But, I must tell you that the issue is not between the students of the University and the state government; rather, this is an issue between the University of Benin and the Edo State Government.” It was gathered that the disagreement between the students and the state government stemmed from the steps taken by Governor Oshiomhole after the attack of the former vice chancellor. Another source informed that as at six o’clock this morning the Uniben main gate was already blocked by the student union government and other union activist. It was gathered that the situation deteriorated when some lecturers of the institution were beaten by some thugs. The thugs were said to be led by kabaka who is a loyal boy to the Edo state governor. The same kabaka and his boys led the demolition of the former VC’s house at the Government Reserved Area, GRA, in Benin, the source stated. This event led to the burning of comrade bus therefore causing the police force to deploy Over 70 armed men with about 20 police vans. It was also informed that the president of the Students Union Government, SUG, led some students to the banks inside the school beating up security men and removing Oshiomole’s pictures in the banks. While confirming the rioting, the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, posted on it official Facebook page that: BENIN-ORE ROAD BLOCKED BY PROTESTING UNIBEN STUDENTS, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES ADVISED As a result of protest embarked upon by some students of the University of Benin resulting in total blockade of the Benin-Ore expressway this morning, motorists coming from the Eastern parts of the country are advised to make use of the Benin bye pass to link the Benin-Ore expressway while motorists coming from Lagos to Benin City are advised to make use of the Old Lagos road along Iguobazuwa road by Okada junction or alternatively the Benin bypass to enter Benin city.”
