**********UPDATE********** The 54 year old Detroit man arrested for Fleeing and Eluding on June 25, 2014 is identified as James Carl Leichtweis. Leichtweis was arraigned on a charge of Fleeing and Eluding Fourth Degree and is being held on a $1,000 bond. Leichtweis has also been charged with reckless driving in connection with the pursuit and him striking a Montcalm County Emergency Services employee. A charge of Fleeing and Eluding Fourth Degree carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison while the reckless driving charge carries a maximum sentence of ninety- three days in jail. **********ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE********** Montcalm County Sheriff’s Deputies engaged in a pursuit on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 that ended with the arrest of the suspect. The suspect, a 54 year old man from Detroit, was lodged on a charge of Fleeing and Eluding and an outstanding warrant for a probation violation out of Wayne County. The suspect may be facing additional charges as a result of his actions. At approximately 4:44 P.M. the deputy assigned to Howard City and staff with the Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services were sent to a report of a subject slumped over in his vehicle that was parked in a parking lot of Bethel Lutheran Church located in the 18000 block of West Howard City-Edmore Road. Medical staff arrived first and contacted the subject later identified as the Detroit man. Medical staff tried to speak with the suspect however he drove away. As he was leaving the parking lot, the suspect’s vehicle struck a member of the medical staff; however the medic was not injured. The deputy arrived in the area and began to search for the suspect vehicle, a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, and located it on Almy Road near Amy School Road. The deputy initiated a traffic stop however the suspect fled from the deputy. The pursuit led through the back roads of Reynolds Township where the suspect drove in excess of 85 Mph and disregard stop signs.
