UPDATE on this suspected case of animal hoarding from Chief Carl Buchanan with the South Bend Fire Department: - They had to force entry when they arrived on scene. The homeowner was on the ground and the first words out of his mouth were “thank you.” - Firefighters were able to assist him outside. The homeowner indicated it was only him and his pets inside. They did a primary search and secondary search to make sure. - The fire was put out quickly. The occupant was given oxygen. He was a bit disorientated initially but refused further treatment. Was only concerned about his pets. -It is unknown how many animals were inside, but Buchanan said it is the most he has ever seen in a home during a fire call. - Buchanan said he heard at least one pet was killed. - This was a residence, not a kennel. ORIGINAL POST: Our crew is on the scene of a fire this morning in the 600 block of S. 24th Street in South Bend. You can see some animals were pulled out of the house -- cats, rabbits, dogs and birds. Well have more information soon.
