The Mental Patients Liberation Alliance (The Alliance) invites you to join with other proponents of human rights in mental health on Friday, November 14, 2014 in Albany, New York, and STAND UP to NAMI-NYS. Stand together and oppose NAMI-NYS’s unanimous and unequivocal support for Bill H.R. 3717. With sweeping disregard for the avalanche of concerns detailed by thousands of people with relevant lived experiences in New York State and nationwide, NAMI-NYS will “stand united” to honor Rep. Tim Murphy with their Legislative Champion Award. NAMI-NYS has drawn a line A general meeting of Where Do YOU Stand? is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 14 at the Holiday Inn. The teach-in will begin at 11:00 a.m. Segments will run for an hour, with 15-minute breaks. Four segments are confirmed – Briefly described: 1) International human rights – the U.S. CRPD ratification and RUDs that have a specific negative impact against our ability to use the CRPD to abolish forced psychiatry 2) Trauma – definition, impact on individuals and communities, prevalence among people who come to the attention of the mental health system, discussion of trauma-informed approaches, how trauma survivors can use social action as a healing approach 3) Comprehensive information about bill H.R. 3717 and the impact and potential impact of the various components to the bill 4) People may participate in organizing, planning, and develop of an Action Response. Members of NAMI Chapters in New York State have been invited to attend the teach-in. (The room at the Holiday Inn will be open at 8:00 a.m.) In addition to the teach-in, diverse individuals and groups are planning activities throughout the day, such as information sharing/distribution, outreach to NAMI members and the general public, and press conferences. People will gather together at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center, 660 Albany-Shaker Road, Albany, New York 12211 at 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 14 to demonstrate solidarity in opposition to NAMI-NYS and the Murphy Bill. Additionally, The Alliance is in negotiations with NAMI-NYS and have asked them to release the vacant conference room held under their contract with the Desmond so that we can lease it.
