UPDATED TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL JULY 9, 2013 AT 11:00PM EDT LAT: 15.3 NORTH LON: 66.2 WEST WINDS: 60 MILE PER HOUR PRESSURE: 29.80"T.S. Chantal Eyes Haiti, Dominican Republic WednesdayUPDATED 11 PM EDT, July 9, 2013UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Chad MerrillRelated Content: Chantal Current Position Chantal Forecast Track Chantal Watches and Warnings United States Alert Map Enlarge Tropical Storm Chantal is quickly jetting across the Caribbean, staying south of Puerto Rico tonight and eyeing the Dominican Republic and Haiti Wednesday. After that, the storm is expected to threaten the Bahamas and it could become a problem for the Southeast U.S. A Hurricane Watch continues for the Dominican Republic southern coast from Barahona to Samana. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico, the entire coast of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Turks and Caicos and southeastern Bahamas. A Tropical Storm Watch continues for the U.S. Virgin Islands, the central Bahamas and Vieques and Culebra. As of 11 p.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Chantal was located near 15.3 N, 66.2 W. This places it 215 miles south of San Juan, Puerto Rico and 1,150 miles southeast of Miami. The storm is moving to the west-northwest at 28 mph. Top sustained winds have decreased a bit to 60 mph and the minimum central pressure with the storm has risen to 29.80 inches or 1009 mb. Tropical storm force winds extend outward about 90 miles to the northeast of the center. A wind gust to 39 mph was recorded at a Live Earth Networks Station at WLII-TV in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico this evening. Due to its fast movement, rainfall amounts are only expected to be 3 to 6 inches for the Leeward and Windward Islands, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Storm surge is expected to increase 1 to 4 feet above normal ahead of the storm. Chantal will sideswipe Puerto Rico tonight and take aim at the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Wednesday. Interaction with land will likely weaken it a bit but as it emerges into the Atlantic, it could strengthen as it eyes the Bahamas Thursday and Friday. It should remain a tropical storm through Friday. Residents across the Southeast and eastern Florida are urged to keep a close eye on the storm as Chantal will likely be steered closer to the Southeast U.S. Atlantic Coast this weekend by a strong high pressure in the western Atlantic. It is likely to remain a tropical storm through the weekend. Typically, storms in early July form in the Gulf of Mexico, as the tropical open Atlantic is still a bit on the chilly side to allow for significant development. The last storm to form this far east was five years ago when Hurricane Bertha formed on July 3. It eventually became a Category 3 storm, but never threatened land.
