URGENT ACTION ALERT: Dangerous radioactive waste regs in Ohio budget bill Currently, no radioactive waste is legally permitted in Ohio landfills. A proposed amendment to the state budget bill being considered by the Ohio senate on Thursday would permit some radioactive waste (TNORM) up to certain levels but EXEMPT much of the radioactive wastes from oil and gas drilling (NORM) from these limits. The bill thus PERMITS radioactive waste dumping that is currently not permitted. The amendment would also allow "dilution" of wastes to bring them below the legal limit. Dilution of water-soluble radioactive waste is not protective. Finally, it would allow the industry to self-police and monitor wastes on-site for radioactivity, a method too inaccurate to determine the actual concentration of radioactivity in oilfield wastes. Please contact your Ohio state senator on Thursday. This is moving quickly, having just been added back into the Senate version of the budget bill. If this amendment becomes law, Ohio communities will be faced with the costs and legacy of leaking radioactive dumps long after landfills close and legal responsibility reverts to the local jurisdiction. Do not be fooled by misrepresentations of this dangerous amendment. Senator Lou Gentile contacts: (614) 466-6508 Email Senator Gentile. Please forward!
