ABOUT CAO YONG One of the most celebrated living artists in the world, Cao Young was born into hardship in China in 1962 and is now a US citizen, found peace and consolation in drawing at age five, and often skipped meals and pawned his clothes to buy art supplies. At eleven he began studying with a noted artist in Beijing, overcame discrimination and rejection on his way through university and finally received his BFA in 1983. He lived for seven years in Tibet, including a now-legendary year studying prehistoric cave paintings and creating artwork while living alone in a deserted mountain cave, which resulted in his first one-man art show in Beijing in 1989. Yong’s perilous journey from Tibet to Japan was captured in an award-winning Japanese book, “Escape,” during which time Yong was recognized as Japan’s most honored muralist; he was extolled as “an artistic genius of our time.” The artist’s most prolific outpouring of work began when he became a US citizen, having arrived to the USA in 1994, first in New York, and then California. Pouring his talent into oil and canvas to depict scenes he has experienced around the world, Yong has become one of the most collected living artists in America and his paintings have been exhibited within prominent museums and art galleries worldwide, and even in New York’s Times Square on the NASDAQ billboards. Some of his most famous paintings include “Freedom,” a tribute to 9/11, “We the People” and works of art featuring European, Eastern, American, Mediterranean, Tibetan and other exciting locales. Yong has recently returned home to China, where he is celebrated daily within his own art gallery, built in his honor in Beijing. Each of his detailed works of art are zealously welcomed worldwide and sold and distributed in over 200 galleries globally. Forced to flee China in 1989, as an American citizen, Yong now aims to bridge East and West in his paintings and to create harmony throughout the world, making it a better place for all to enjoy. “Once an art-rebel who was literally a wanted man in his native China, Cao is now a wealthy painter of romantic visions of California, Hawaii and the Italian coast, having remade himself in three countries by mustering physical endurance, resourcefulness and a classic immigrants willingness to adapt.” ~ The Los Angeles Times The Cleantech Open is made possible by the generous support of our sponsors and partners, including Global Partner, Chevron; National Premier Sponsor, Wells Fargo; National Education Partner, University of Phoenix; National Category Sponsor, Arrow; and National Sponsors, Clean Tech Advocates and Palo Alto Research Center (PARC).
