US and Japan step up tariff deal talks We dont think US or Japanese officials will make sufficient progress in time for an agreement to be struck before Barack Obamas visit to Tokyo. The Obama administration had hoped to finalise negotiations in February, but no real progress has been made since then. Shinzo Abe will use Obamas visit to explain his desire for a reinterpretation of the Japanese constitution. The two are unlikely to get bogged down by tariff issues. Regarding the TPP, its hard to see what will break the current trade deadlock between the US and Japan. TPP is a foreign policy goal of both Mr Abe and Mr Obama, but both remain hostage to strong vested local interests.
