US announces grant for women safety programme in Delhi The United States has announced a grant of 2 lakh 50,000 dollars for an ongoing programme to make Delhi a safe city for women. The programme, Delhi Safe City - Free of Violence against Women and Girls, is being implemented in partnership with the Indian civil society organisations. A statement said in New Delhi that the grant has been announced to the organisation UN Women, which is a part of the United Nations Womens Global Safe Cities Initiative. US Ambassador to India Nancy J. Powell said, the US recognises gender-based violence as one of the most debilitating factors impeding a womans active participation in any economy of the world. She said that the US is pleased to partner with UN Women to help promote safe cities and reduce gender-based violence. UN Women Representative covering India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, Rebecca Tavares said, such a grant will go a long way in ensuring womens right to the city and the right to be free of fear.
