USA NEW YORK GOVERNOR SAID THAT ID BEING ISSUED BY CITY COUNCIL TO UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS MEANS NOTHING UNLESS THE FEDERAL GOVT LEGISLATION TO BACK IT THROUGH IMMIGRATION SYSTEM AS IT COULD BE USED ONLY FOR BUSINESS WITHIN CITY OR FOR OPENING BANK ACCOUNT 10TH JULY 2014 New York state governor Andrew Cuomo has said that identification cards by the New York city council for the undocumented immigrants mean nothing without the federal government legislation to back it. New York city council following the course of a number of other city councils voted in favour of providing valid identification cards to the illegal immigrants which could be used for their business with city council, banks or other institutions. Governor Cuomo said in a statement that unless the federal government act to reform the immigration system, the issuance of identification card to undocumented immigrants will make no difference. Governor further added that there is no plane to expand the program to the other municipalities of the state. “This is all piecemeal. The answer has to be federal legislation,” Cuomo clarified. “If we’re going to make a real difference on immigration, it’s going to take a federal response,” Governor said. “The Congress has a chance to do that this year, and they should,” Governor Cuomo further added. New York city had earlier last week voted to allow the issuance of identification cards for more than half million undocumented immigrants residing the city. The 43-to-3 vote will launch the largest local ID program in the nation — also allowing transgender, homeless and elderly people who don’t have driver’s licenses to secure an ID. Two council members did not take part in the voting process and abstained. After passing the for the ID program, Mayor de Blasio had vowed to sign the law. The applicant seeking to obtain an ID must prove his or her identity with documents such as a birth certificate or passport from any country. The residency in the New York through utility bills, pay stubs or other documents is also required. President Barack Obama has recently vowed to use his executive powers to reform the immigration system after Republicans have indicated that there is no chance of progress on the immigration reforms.
