USAA is on my mind. It is a financial services company for the military and military families. Founded in 1922 by military officers to provide car insurance because of difficulties they encountered in getting insurance because they were perceived to be high risk, it has grown into a Fortune 500 company headquartered in that most of military towns, San Antonio. I became a member of USAA, the United Services Automobile Association, which hardly now describes the wide array of financial services provided, in 1990. My National Guard unit was being mobilized for the First Gulf War and I could not find my MONY life insurance policy to determine if it had an act of war clause. My agent said that it would take six to eight weeks to get a duplicate copy. Friends suggested that I call USAA. I did and USAA did everything possible to expedite writing a $500K term policy knowing that I was going to war within weeks. They Fed-Exed the application to me and set up a medical exam the next morning. I had a policy within 30 hours of calling USAA. Children of USAA members are eligible to join and both of my children are members. Kate financed her house and her car through USAA and got very low interest rates. Recently USAA decided to go into the health insurance market. Will is living in LA and suffered kidney stones in 2006 and 2008. He had health insurance, an individual policy, that went from about $130 a month to over $800 a month, not withstanding that he has not been to a doctor in years. The California blue company just kept raising his rates. Well, he applied for health insurance through USAA and lo and behold, his new policy which is equal to that blue policy costs only $307 a month, a savings of over $500 a month. Here is the bottom line. If you or your parents were ever in the military and honorably discharged, you might be eligible to join USAA. If so, you should think about it because it is a very good company, very military, extremely military oriented, and a very good value. USAA.COM I highly recommend it. If you are an old Boomer like me and your father who fought in WWII, Korea or Vietnam is still alive, you should have him join for car insurance. That will make you eligible. You will not regret it.
