USAID Promotes Sustainable Fishing in Sorsogon. USAID consulted with fisherfolk from at least six coastal barangays of Bulan, San Vicente and Capul in Northern Samar to promote right size fishing of lawlaw. The population of this economically important fish species has rapidly declined in the past 3 to 5 years due to overfishing. To promote sustainable fishing, USAID and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Sorsogon and Northern Samar helped fisherfolk identify sardine species and the locations of where lawlaw and other species feed, migrate and spawn. The group also visited the University of Eastern Philippines College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Resources to assist in a study on local lawlaw fisheries. Research results will be used to determine further needs of local government units.
