USMC SILENT DRILL When I was a young actor in London, I was in a play call Chips With Everything by Arnold Wesker. It was about a group of young RAF conscripts, and, as directed by the great John Dexter, it was an amazing theatrical performance. We all had to be trained in military drill for six weeks, by the famous RSM Brittain (the loudest voice in the British Army), who scared the strides off us bolshie, irreverent young actors but who quickly knocked us into fine, disciplined shape, and whom we came to respect and admire. There were two high points in the play, both in silence - a raid on a coke store (acrobatics over an eight foot high fence) at the end of Act 1 and a full passing out parade at the end of Act 2. Usually both got a standing ovation. But however well-disciplined we were, it pales in comparison with this - the famous silent drill (no orders called) by the US Marine Corps. I saw a live performance of it once, when I lived in Washington, DC, and it was thrilling, specially when they start throwing the rifles about. Perhaps even the Rockettes would be impressed: https://youtube/watch?v=Y90UPLLo6nY
