UTech to respond to financial irregularities report before public release (Source The Gleaner) Jovan Johnson, Gleaner Writer The Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, says the University of Technology (UTech) is being allowed to respond to a report on allegations of financial irregularities before its content goes public. The allegations were raised during a dispute involving UTech’s administration and several staff unions. Yesterday, chairperson of the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission, Maxine Henry-Wilson, said the report contains major recommendations relating to the universitys leadership and finances. The report was submitted to the ministry last week by a Derrick Heaven-chaired committee established last October by the Commission. Thwaites says he has received updates from the Office of the Contractor General, the Auditor General and the Ministry of Finance which have also been investigating operations at UTech. He says the findings will be revealed once all the reports are submitted. Thwaites did not give a timeline for the completion of the consultation with UTech’s leadership. The education ministry intervened in the UTech dispute following a newspaper advertisement by the universitys academic and administrative unions alleging employment and financial irregularities. The unions specifically claimed that the university accumulated a $100-million deficit in one year. UTechs top brass had denied the allegations saying they were misunderstandings.
