UWC SRC 2014-2015 posted Orientation Speech 21 January 2015 By: Lindokuhle Mandyoli : Deputy President, UWC SRC 2015 The Chancellor Most Reverend Archbishop Dr Thabo Mokgoba VC & Rector Prof Tyrone Pretorious DVC Academic Prof Bharuthram Acting DVC SDS Prof David Fisher Dep Registrar Prof Judith Cornelliesen Deans of Arts and Science Prof Brown and Prof Davies-Coleman Deans of Various Faculties Fellow SRC Members Academic and Non Academic Staff Parents Sons and Daughters of the Soil And most importantly the first years gathered here today It is with great pleasure that I stand here today to address a very special cohort of young South Africans; Young South Africans that have taken it upon themselves to be the beacons of hope in their communities; young people who have chosen this institution with impeccable achievements and an inspirational legacy as their place of study. It is my belief that you will grab this opportunity with both hands and realize your full potential, while contributing to the country’s development of knowledge. You join UWC at a very special time, we have a new Rector, a few new Senior executive members, a few new World Class buildings and facilities. However, you join a UWC that needs sustainable development of its achievements. You can only do this by being an active and engaged student on our campus. There are many services and initiatives available on our campus; we encourage you to take full advantage of them to ensure your holistic development as a student. This legacy I speak of stems from the gains made by the leadership of the late UWC Rector Prof Jakes Gerwel who played a huge role in the struggle against apartheid. It is also derived from the role of the University of the Western Cape in the fight for freedom and a democratic South Africa. Furthermore, you find us today as one of the leading Universities in Africa. As a University that is truly South African we have the biggest and most advanced Science building in Africa. We are leading in a few fields in science research in the country; we also pride ourselves in the Centre for Humanities Research in the Arts faculty where ground-breaking research is done on a yearly basis. All this also initiated by a progressive Son of this University Prof Brian O’Connell. We are also happy to experience the return of one of our own as the new Rector and new leader of this revolutionary University; Prof Tyrone Pretorius. We wish him all the best. I say to you then that you are to be the drivers of this elaborate legacy. Without your positive contribution to it, it will not stand the test of time. Now come Sons and daughters of Africa, realise your role, understand it and fulfil it with no fear or favour. The continent needs YOU, Mother Africa is yearning for a true day of Ultimate Freedom. So, to all of you: embrace this challenge, confront all obstacles and make South Africa a country of true excellence. WELCOME TO THE INTELLECTUAL HOME OF THE LEFT!!!!
