Ubulu-Uku Electricity Project. We appreciate the comments being made by persons on the desire of concerned citizens of Ubulu-Uku to bring electricity to the town. It is only natural in this age and times for people to express their opinions, apprehensions and frustrations about the power situation in Nigeria in general and Ubulu-Uku in particular. It is also obvious that nobody can stop anybody from promoting lies, deceit, blackmail, and even hatchet jobs on the social media. That is generally what is in vogue. Constructive criticisms are welcome in society for they guide leaders and help them avoid pitfalls. However, criticisms that are borne out of ill-will only encourage suspicion, dissent, apathy, and endanger genuine efforts/dreams. The cream of Ubulu-Uku society, under the platform of Stakeholders Forum, assembled twice this year to brainstorm on the challenges in the town, and identified electricity as a priority. A committee comprising respectable Ubulu-Uku personalities in the power industry in Nigeria was constituted, and they came up with a roadmap and the cost of realizing the objective of bringing light back to the town after about five years. Another ad-hoc committee was set up to appeal to selected privileged sons and daughters to donate generously for the execution of the project. It is necessary to state here that the DISCO did not prompt, trick, blackmail, cajole or coerce Ubulu-Uku people to engage in this pursuit. The town union also never and did not conscript everybody in the town to pay money for raising over (160) fallen poles, conductors, insulators, etc required to ensure the distribution of power in town. Ubulu-Uku people are knowledgeable, including those daily responding to this call. They know about the unbundling of PHCN, the pros and cons of privatisation, the finepoints of economics and the politics of the day. The ad-hoc committee is at the verge of opening discussions with the DISCO on how we can partner with them to achieve this objective. We believe there is no law against communities partnering with government, monopolists or capitalists. We believe we have the capacity to engage in discussions that will benefit our community. Our ultimate desire is for Ubulu-Uku to have electricity as soon as the 132/330kva stepdown at Asaba/Ibusa is commissioned and energized. Our conducts, records, accounts and the entire project is open for whoever wants to track every activity of the exercise. Together we can make Ubulu-Uku better!
