Uduaghan Charges Lawyers To Help Sustain Democracy BY ANDY AKENI/DIBIE NKIRUKA DELTA State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has challenged Legal Practitioners to give more support to aid the sustenance of democracy in the country. The Governor represented by his deputy, Prof Amos Utuama (SAN) gave the challenge while declaring open the Asaba NBA 2014 Law week held in Asaba. Speaking at the event, Prof Utuama stressed the need for members of the NBA nationwide to be proactive in discharging their duties as they have a crucial role to play in the sustenance of the country’s democracy. He commended the Asaba branch NBA for her strides in helping to tackle the problem of armed robbery and kidnapping through the dispensation of justice and for partnering with the State Government in making Delta State a safe place for all to live in. While saying that the Asaba Bar ranked one of the best in the country, he congratulated a member of the Bar, Mr. Chike Onyemamen (SAN) on his recent elevation to the position of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and urged the NBA to succeed in more fronts. According to the governor, “people must have confidence in the judiciary. We are assuring that government will continue to partner with NBA, but I challenge you to give more support in the area of justice delivery to sustain democracy in the country”. Also speaking, the state Chief Judge, Justice Zai-Laye Abiodun Smith, charged legal practitioners to rededicate themselves to the dispensation of justice by putting in their best. While thanking them for appreciating the judiciary, he assured of a better judiciary adding that the judiciary should be criticized rightly. Earlier, while welcoming guests, the Chairman of NBA Asaba, Barrister Chukwuma Oseyenim thanked all for their contributions that made the branch to record successes. He lauded the state government for assistance to NBA in the state, saying the judiciary is a stabilising organ in our democracy. According to him, “we are grateful to the state Governor and his deputy for their inclusive policy of partnership, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice for all the successes recorded by the branch and promised on behalf of the branch to sustain the partnership”. The keynote address with the theme, “The judiciary in contemporary Nigeria”, was delivered by Mr. Ken Mozia (SAN) with many other guest lecturers lined up for the law week.
