Uduaghan Is A Transparent Governor, Says Former EFCC Boss BY FIDELIS EGUGBO Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan is one governor that believes in the rule of law and if anything must be done, it should be done right. His style of governance has greatly improved the fortunes of Delta State and he has not minced words about taking appropriate measures for the rule of law to be respected. It did not, therefore, come as a surprise to most watchers of events in Delta State when a former chairman of a crime-busting organization, an organization which has ensured financial prudence among political office holders, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, gave a clean bill of health to the Governor Uduaghan’s administration. According to Mrs. Waziri, “he (Dr. Uduaghan) is a performing governor, following due process and he has done very well for his people. When I was coming, I thought I will have to land in Benin, but was told there was an airport here, the Asaba International Airport that I saw is one of the best in the country; your governor has performed well in infrastructural development.” That statement was obviously coming from someone who was coming to Delta for either the first time or the first time in more than seven years. This is because, the more than seven years of the governance of the state by Dr. Uduaghan has impacted positively on different spheres of life. The foundation of the airport was laid by the Uduaghan’s administration and eminent personalities from different parts of the world have rated it as one of the best in Nigeria, if not Africa. But apart from the beauty and quality of the Asaba International Airport, the construction of the airport has reduced, to a large extent, the loss of lives as a result of people in Delta and neighbouring Anambra State shuttling between the more than two hours drive from the Benin Airport and Asaba, Onitsha, Nnewi and other towns in Delta and the South-East. Yes! Mrs. Waziri commended Governor Uduaghan’s giant strides in the area of infrastructural development from what she saw of the airport. But, apart from the airport, the governor has constructed bridges, roads, hospitals, schools, and the new Government House, Asaba, if we are to look at the successes recorded by the Uduaghan’s administration in the area of infrastructural development. The former EFCC boss spoke on Wednesday at the maiden edition of The Sun Women Leadership Summit in Asaba. She also thanked Governor Uduaghan for identifying with the struggle by women for more recognition in decision making process. She did not fail to have a message for the women as the event was for women. According to her, “I want to ask women not to lose their femininity, respect themselves, dress responsibly and at the end, they will earn respect.” Governor Uduaghan, at the summit, displayed his desire for women to be actively involved in the scheme of things stating that women have the ability to produce results and most often, are honest. He stated that his administration has surpassed the 35 per cent affirmative action and gave reasons why women have not recorded great successes in politics. “Women must come together to win in a man’s world, they should refuse to be used to pull down or limit their fellow women in whatever field of endeavour. The women must agree to work together, they will win in elections by refusing to be manipulated by men and be used against their fellow women, the men can manoeuvre their ways in politics, but it is difficult for women to do so.” The former Managing Director of Bank of Industry, Evelyn Oputu, in a thought-provoking keynote lecture, stated that for Nigeria to have the status of a developed nation, the potentials of women should be unlocked, observing that women have the same traits with men. While the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, who was the chairman of the occasion, expressed hope that the summit would provide women the opportunity to be involved in the decision making process of the country. The Managing Director of Sun Newspaper, Mr. Femi Adesina, had explained that the summit was an important forum to give women the opportunity to discuss on the way forward and commended the Delta State Government for hosting the maiden edition of the summit. It was really a well packaged three-day summit which was one of the series that has been held in Delta State as Delta and Asaba, in particular, have become a delight for people who desire to hold their conferences in a peaceful and friendly environment.
