Ugh. So much FUD about online identity and government online. (Thats fear, uncertainty and doubt, for those unclear.) After years, pilots for federated identity are being tested in Michigan and Pennsylvania: gcn/Articles/2014/04/08/Access-management.aspx?Page=1&p=1 Heres the key context for this approach, the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, or NSTIC strata.oreilly/2011/05/nstic-analysis-identity-privacy.html If you dont feel like reading 2700 words, heres the short version: 1) governments need ways to authenticate users online to provide digital services. 2) people want these services -- think about renewing your drivers license or passport, reserving campgrounds, accessing your records 3) usernames/passwords arent a sustainable or secure strategy 4) U.S. citizens arent cool with a national ID card 5) federated identity lets people authenticate themselves using the identity provider of their choice 6) These pilots in MI & PA are testing out the approach/ “In the EU [European Union] mentality, identity can only exist if the state provides it,” said Ian Glazer, year ago. “That’s inherently an un-American position. [NSTIC] is frankly an adoption of the core values of the nation. There’s a rugged individualism in what we’re incorporating into this strategy.” Its worth noting the United Kingdom tried the ID card approach, under the last government, saw it fail disastrously, and have now adopted NSTIC and are preparing to scale it nationally. More on that later.
