Ulster Unionists hit out at “desperate act” by DUP leadership The Ulster Unionist Party’s Chief Whip Robin Swann MLA has described the DUP Leadership’s decision to table a ‘petition of concern’ as a desperate act in which once again the interests of that Party have been placed ahead of any other considerations. Robin Swann says: “The decision of the DUP to table a Petition of Concern against Monday`s motion is a desperate act from the DUP leadership to stifle accountability and stinks of protectionism where Party must always come first, irrespective of the carnage that causes to public confidence in the politics of Stormont. Abuse of the Petition of Concern mechanism, will only further undermine the public perception of this administration. The whole purpose of an Assembly recall was to restore public confidence in the accountability and reputation of politics in Stormont. Unfortunately the shameless arrogance of the DUP will further undermine public confidence in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Unfortunately the shameless arrogance of the DUP will further undermine public confidence in the Northern Ireland Assembly. It will be up to the electorate to ultimately hold them to account. The resistance to appropriate scrutiny no doubt explains why the DUP are so ardently opposed to the extension of the Defamation Bill to Northern Ireland.”
