Ultimately many of us want a better way than to spank, especially - TopicsExpress

Ultimately many of us want a better way than to spank, especially when it becomes obvious that its not achieving the desired effect. I have only spanked in extraordinarily rare moments (3 times in 5 years), and after each time I found myself questioning myself, trying to understand what just happened and what I could have done to have prevented it. That is to say, I ruminated not so much about the spanking, but how to have prevented the _conditions_ that ultimately led to the situation in which the spanking occurred. My children are very good children, and when _properly_managed_ are almost never in need of corrections or punishments (including time-outs). But that is key: proper management. Leave them to their own devices too long, and all hell breaks loose. Act nonchalant some of the time to undesirable behavior, but strictly prohibit it other times, and confusion, frustration, and outbursts will be the result. Of course, at that point, who is really to blame for it? The answer should be obvious. Be what you want your children to become. They are watching you.
