Ultrasound is a skill that’s increases with usage; there must be a minimal number of scans to gain confidence in using the device. The amount of ultrasound exposure hat students are getting is in question. 53% of interns reported personally scanning at the bedside, but not that many had practiced before then. It is important to note that diagnostic ultrasounds are not being taught, but many procedural exams are, with ultrasound guided internal jugular insertion being taught the most. (This point is made on page 2 of the analyzed ultrasound data.) However, paracentesis, thoracentesis, thyroid biopsies and peripheral vasculature ultrasounds are not being addressed. Diagnostic ultrasounds, to include, FAST, Focused cardiac, AAA, DVT, lung or any other combined protocols (RUSH et. al) are not being taught enough in medical school to sufficiently do a scan at bedside. These procedural exams will help define competency and specifically what needs to be done to help define ultrasound competency........jess sayin
