Umno leaders are reminded to do a reality check on themselves and be willing to give way for the younger generation to move up in the party. Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said there was a need for leaders to give way for others as part of the partys rejuvenation process. How are we going to attract younger people to join Umno if they get chopped or blocked or sidelined when it comes to moving up the party ladder, he said in his speech at the Johor Umno convention here. He said it was pointless for Umno leaders at division levels to retain their seat if the parliamentary seat or state seat were lost in the election. Bernama quoted Najib as saying that Umno must be successful not only as a political party but the success must be reflected in ballot papers in general elections. He said the important benchmark for Umno as a political party was its success in retaining power in the country. The ultimate test is to ensure our success, which must be reflected in ballot papers in general elections, because it is the most important benchmark, he told a press conference later. Present were Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Johor Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Umno Information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan. The two-day convention is being attended by leaders and members of the 26 Umno divisions in Johor. As the president of the biggest component party in Barisan Nasional (BN), Najib said he wanted to see Umno, which was first established in Istana Besar here, to be successful and continue to retain power. Commenting on his speech in which he touched on party reform, the prime minister repeated his stand that it should begin with members and leaders of Umno. It must begin with us, our love for the party. It must be upheld by all party members with undying fighting spirit without hope of reward, position and interests, he said. He said what was important was for Umno to remain successful and to retain power. On his advice for young Umno leaders to be given places in the party, he said it should be based on their positions in certain areas. He said these young leaders must be guided and given the opportunity to make their own contributions to the party.
