Unbiased America (share!) This is astonishing. The government is pushing to regulate online political discussion. Yesterday, the Federal Election Commission deadlocked on a vote that would have applied campaign finance laws to free youtube videos. Yes, you heard that right. If you make a video with any political comments in it, the government wants you to include the same disclaimers that political advertisements on television are required to display (This message was brought to you by...) and to submit paperwork to regulators about how much it cost to make the video, what your political affiliation is, etc. Ann Ravel, the incoming chairwoman of the FEC, unhappy that the vote didnt pass, released a statement complaining that the commission has “turned a blind eye” to the internet’s influence in politics. She vowed to put in place rules that would overturn a 2006 internet exemption that protects individual bloggers, online commentators, and members of the public from regulations on free speech. Political committees and individuals or groups who pay to have their ads run online are still subject to disclosure requirements. The current FEC Chairman said what Ms. Ravel is proposing would require a massive bureaucracy digging into the corners of the web to police what’s posted about politics. “We’re talking about everyone who’s not a political committee who wants to post, for free, videos on YouTube, blog content, chat room content, create their own website expressing their political opinions,” he said. “I cannot imagine a regulatory regime that would put government censors on the Internet daily, culling YouTube video posts for violations of law — nothing short of a Chinese censorship board,” he said.
