Under Governor Walker, Wisconsin wind production has plummeted. We’ve doubled down on out-of-state hydro electric power. Our installed solar capacity has dropped to 28th in the nation. Now we’re even looking to expand our pipelines and begin transporting tar sands. When it comes to energy, Wisconsin has developed a nasty habit of accepting all the risk with no reward. It’s time to stop the madness, and the recently announced EPA Climate Action Plan will be a great start. This plan offers a real opportunity for Wisconsin to recommit to being an energy leader and innovator. Wisconsin should do our part by developing a state-based plan to reduce carbon that includes: Investing in renewable energy, especially Wisconsin-based technology and fuels. Expanding energy efficiency and conservation, like the Focus on Energy program, to help homeowners and businesses save on their energy costs. Encouraging us to work with other Midwestern states to create a regional carbon-trading system. Currently, there are limits on how much mercury, arsenic, soot, and other pollutants power plants dump into our air. This new plan adds carbon to the list. With 40% of our carbon pollution in Wisconsin coming from coal-burning power plants, it’s high time we take this important step. Submit a public comment to the EPA today, and your voice will be part of the official record. Your message will also go to Governor Scott Walker, so he can see just how many Wisconsinites are eager to reduce our carbon emissions. Please add your voice by acting now.
