Understanding God’s Terms January 25, 2015 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:31 A covenant is a sacred pledge based on trust between two people. Although the New Covenant promised and delivered by God through Jesus Christ is not a legal contract, it is a binding covenant with far-reaching implications. It is critical that we understand the terms of this new covenant. Understanding the terms of this new covenant is a matter of life or death in this life and in the life to come. It is not a trivial issue! Jesus introduced us to this new covenant in His blood. Jesus satisfied all of the requirements of God’s law (Old Testament or covenant) on our behalf through His living, His death, and His resurrection. “And He (Jesus) took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is My body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of Me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament (covenant) in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:19-20 Now, it is up to us to believe and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior. Once we have met this requirement or term of the agreement, we can become partakers of this new covenant and the divine nature of Christ as described in 2 Peter Chapter 1. “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the one who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence. And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. Some of the terms of this new covenant include: “making every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.” 2 Peter Chapter 1. “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gentiles Are Heirs According To The Promise.” Galatians 3:26 “. . . God has now revealed to us His mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill His own good pleasure. And this is the plan: At the right time He will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God for He chose us in advance, and He makes everything work out according to His plan. The Apostle Paul goes on to say: “God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God. And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom He promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that He will give us the inheritance He promised and that He has purchased us to be His own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify Him.” So I encourage, I admonish, I plead for you to draw close to God, and He will draw close to you. . “ James 4:8. Listen for His voice! Do you hear Him when He speaks? If you are observant and pay attention you will hear God as surely as if He was standing right in front of you speaking to you orally. God wants you to talk to Him and to trust Him. In return He will love you and bless you and teach you. He will show you how you can achieve a life filled with peace and happiness.
