Unedited snippet - using Casper/WingQueen from the rescue I support as a character model...a haunting, mysterious barn owl. He kept his voice soft, which Tia’hin appreciated. Her head nodded until she lifted it and growled under her breath. “First though…first we need to get Ale’sam back and meet this em’hin’oot. I want to see what he’s like. If he’s a fitting ath’er’in for his kind, if he has a mate – if we can even ally ourselves with him. We aren’t fighting with him unless he’s strong. I won’t let our kh’in’sha become a shield for the humans. K’oughser’s work would be done for him then.” As Tia’hin spoke, a soft ‘hoot-hoot’ broke the air, and a snow-white feather dropped to the ground as a voice called down to her. “Bring this token, ground-sister. The em’hin’oot will know I spoke to you and that you come in peace. He will be able to talk to you and you to him. I will be around. Hunt well, lyko’a!” The called out words of the owl were echoed throughout the forest, the soft litany of almost eerie song rang through the air and Tia’hin’s fur prickled at the base. It was as though a spell had been cast over the forest, one that lasted no more than half a dozen of her frantic heartbeats. Silence reigned and she couldn’t breathe. As soon as the forest regained its sound, the trance broken, she gulped down a lungful of air and trembled underneath Orm’bel. “Maybe we are wise to meet this man. If he has emissaries of such power…then we may have to gain from this.” Her voice trembled and she felt the reassuring warmth and weight of her mate as he cradled her at his side. She felt comforted by his presence. He was hers, their scents were meshed and nothing could take him from her bar death – a death she denied she felt looming over her.
