Unfortunately it has been pointed out to me that someone complained about other bands being on before the Phat Band last Wednesday at the Concourse in Sydney. Normally I wouldnt say anything, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I have very little control over whats on a ticketing website (yes, even on gigs I play on). However in this case I feel compelled to defend the Phat Band and Gordon Goodwin. Not only are they very generous with their time and energy but they are friends of mine. Firstly: - Mark - There were support bands before the Phat Band - this is extremely common, many big shows of international artists have support acts, its actually often a requirement to get a working visa for the guests. Ive never gone to a concert and been surprised to see that theres a support act, even when its not advertised. The issue is whether it takes time from the main act… it didnt. The Phat band played for nearly 2 hours straight, when they do a two set show they play the SAME number of songs. I know this as Ive done many shows with them. Those guys played their hearts out and I dont want anyone thinking (or worse saying) that somehow they might not have played enough. My other gripe is that the complaint came BEFORE the show happened. How do you know what its going to be like if it hasnt happened yet? To go on FB telling everyone that the Phat Band wont be on until 8:20 encourages them to stay away until then - there were posts saying see you at the pub until 8:19 Anybody who did that missed the following: - 1) Gordon Goodwin playing sax in the 3rd song (one of only a couple of sax solos he took all night) 2) Marian Petrescu - if you missed this, then you were ripped off, by whoever encouraged you to come late. Its only my opinion (shared by Gordon Goodwin) that this man is one of the greatest pianists alive. Anyway - its all over now and everyone who saw both Marian and the Phat Band was absolutely blown away. Im planning to organise more visits of great musicians and hopefully everyone will just be thrilled to hear them and be able to overlook any ticketing website omissions etc. Keep swinging :-)
